Germany helps to support World Food Programme Project in close partnership with the Egyptian Ministry of International Cooperation

27.07.2020 - Pressemitteilung

The German Embassy is happy to announce that the close cooperation between the German Development Bank (KfW) and our Egyptian partners has made it possible to support the UN World Food Programme WFP in Egypt with a 15 million Euro contribution from the Egyptian-German Dept Swap Programme for 2020.

The fund will be used to launch the new project ‘Investing in Human Capital in Rural Upper Egypt’, a two-year programme dedicated to support 136,000 households with their nutrition and education needs. Helping provide women and young people with better opportunities of generating their own incomes is another core aspect of the programme. By strengthening and supporting families in this way, the project envisages to build up their resilience in facing the social and economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and make them less vulnerable to future challenges.

„This contribution reflects the fruitful and sound tradition of German-Egyptian Cooperation. In the light of the challenges caused by the worldwide pandemic, we must not forget the most vulnerable among us.“, said Ambassador Dr. Nunn. „Thus, the Dept Swap Programme is a great opportunity to jointly help people in need.“

The project will be implemented by WFP together with the Egyptian Minstry of International Cooperation and in coordination with the Ministries of Education, Health and Population, Social Solidarity, Supply and Internal Trade, Local Development, Agriculture and Land Reclamation, the National Council of Women, as well as the National Nutrition Institute and the Egyptian Knowledge Bank. It builds on previous successful partnerships between WFP and the German Development Bank (KfW) on the ‘Food for Education through a Life Cycle Approach’ implemented under the previous Egyptian-German Debt Swap Programme.
