The German Embassy in Cairo is pleased to announce that Germany has contributed 540.000 LE (around 30 thousand Euros) to support the important work of the Egyptian charity „Mersal Foundation“ by providing hospitals with essential preventive and medical supplies. The funds are being used to help equip hospitals in different governorates across Egypt, namely in Fayoum, Cairo, Gizeh, Qena and Marsa Matrouh.

„The global pandemic has put great strain on the medical sectors in each and every country of the world. Those who tirelessly work for our health and who care for the neediest amongst us, need support and solidarity now. I am therefore very pleased that Germany contributes to this effort by backing the team of “Mersal Foundation„ in their important humanitarian work.“, German chargé d’affaires a.i. in Cairo, Sönke Siemon said.

Mersal Foundation was founded by a group of young motivated Egyptians in 2015 with the aim of creating comprehensive health care programs for underprivileged patients. Since then the team has established a wide contact network of doctors and hospitals and coordinated help for countless people by sponsoring urgently needed examinations and surgeries and providing health care facilities with medical equipment. Ms Heba Rashed, the initiator and head of „Mersal Foundation“, describes their mission as follows: „We are working to help provide medical services to all those in need, regardless of their background, gender, religion or political orientation.“

The current contribution is part of Germany’s efforts to support the Egyptian people in addressing and overcoming the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic. Additional support was already allocated in the field of solid waste collection and technical education.
